Head Start is a federal and state funded program for preschool children from low income families.
Most Head Start programs are operated by local non-profit organizations in almost every county in the country.
Children who attend Head Start participate in a variety of educational activities.
Head Start helps all children succeed. Services are offered to meet the special needs of children with disabilities.
Children in Head Start are between the ages of three and five.

There are many programs that make up Head Start. Here are the services that we provide:

Games, stories, art, music and outside play are important learning activities at Head Start. Your child will learn how to play with others and how to share and listen.
Head Start children discover a love for learning, and they develop good problem solving
skills.
Each child receives
a speech, language and hearing screening. If therapy is needed,
your child will be referred or provided with professional help.
Disability services are available to children with special needs or a handicapping condition.
An Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) is prepared for each child, with the help of parents and teachers.

Your child is required to have a medical and dental examination as part of the Head Start program.
Parents will be advised of any health care needs and provided with information about follow-up services.
Hot, nutritious meals and snacks are served daily at the Head Start centers.
Breakfast and lunch are a happy time of eating and conversation with other children and adults.
Children learn independence by passing bowls of food around the table and serving themselves.
After each meal, your child will brush his or her teeth with the group.

If your child cannot attend the Head Start center, he or she may qualify for the Home-Based Program.
A teacher will come to your home once a week to work for 90 minutes with you and your child.
Parents will learn how to help their child with activities throughout the rest of the week. A minimum
of 2 Wednesdays a month, your child will be picked up for a classroom socialization experience.

The Head Start Family Day Care Mentor Program partners with Type A and B Day Care Providers that are certified through Job and Family Services to provide Head Start services in their Day Care home. They must have Head Start eligible children in their day care to work with this program. The providers are required to do lesson plans each week and attend a training each month that we provide for them so they can earn their CDA. The Family Day Care Mentor goes to the Day Care Providers house once a week to do a visit with the children and provide guidance and advice for the Day Care Provider.

Parents are very important in the Head Start Program. We encourage parents to visit classes and take part in their child's education.
Many of our parents volunteer to help with field trips, classroom activities, and parent groups.
Our foster grandparents are a very special part of each child's learning experience.
Foster grandparents help to increase a child's self-esteem by providing that special one-to-one attention.
A Head Start child's family can also be helped with other social services, such as medical care, job training, or emergency heat or food.

Our teachers have extensive and on-going training in child development. Each classroom has at least 1 teacher with an associate's degree or better in Early Childhood Development.
Many Head Start parents who volunteer eventually become trained teachers. Presently, about half of our staff are former Head Start parents.
